The granddaddy of foot racing, the historic Boston Marathon,
was held once again on Patriots Day, April 17, 2017. This
26.2 mile race from Framingham to Boston in the USA has long
been the favourite of many a runner around the globe. Ten of
our SWEAT SYDNEY/MELBOURNE PACK runners made the long trip
from Australia to race in the iconic event this year.
Boston can serve up a smorgasbord of weather variations in
April, from snow storms, to perfect cool conditions, to heat
waves. It was a hot, humid day on April 17 in Boston this
year. There are three main enemies for marathon runners when
it comes to weather….. heat, humidity and headwinds.
The heat and humidity knocked the 30000+ runners around and
the wind proved to be less than favourable. Not a day for
PBs. More a day for survival. Boston has very tough
qualifying times and every runner that lines up is a
champion in their own right. And that is just what our ten
brave souls did. Each of them completed the tough Boston
course on a challenging day and claimed their unicorn
medal.
Our honour roll of Boston finishers this year was:
Amy Cheung 3.46.15, Paul Young 4.34.40, Robert Lansdown
3.14.46, Simon Glendenning 3.05.23, Donna Richards 3.43.01,
Liz Pittaway 3.12.15, Andrew Halliday 3.17.37, Michelle Kluz
3.17.57, Lynda Dickson (PICTURED) 4.08.00, Jose Salahoras
3.36.30
Well done all. You gotta be proud of that run!
